An opt-in Page (or Freebie Page or Landing Page) is a web page created as a destination for visitors to your website to get information about a particular offer or resource that’s relevant to them. They will usually enter their name and email address in exchange to receiving the offer you are promoting. An opt-in page focuses on a single purpose such as a free ebook or a free mini-course, and it encourages people to take action.

An opt-in page should be free of any distractions such as social media links, main website menu or links to offsite pages. So if you have those items on your landing page, remove them.

An opt-in page can be very short or longer. It all depends on your offering. If you need more in-depth explanation of what your viewers are getting, then use more space to do so.

A short opt-in page an be very sweet. Are you offering a checklist? A mini-guide? Then a short version would be plenty.

Let’s take a look at the beautiful opt-in page created for Organically Thin.

To create a high-converting opt-in page, there are three things that need to be present above the fold:

  1. Who is it for
  2. What is it they’re going to get and
  3. What do they need to do next

If you would like a longer page and stress some points as to why your viewer needs to download that particular freebie, you will need to add more sections to your opt-in page.

So let’s check out this absolutely gorgeous opt-in page created for Health & Wellness Coach Mia Russo Stern. Click here to visit her opt-in page.

Header Section

Elements of the header section:

  1. Background image. If you theme or template allows it, add a nice background image that is illustrating the item you are promoting. You can also use a solid color as a background. I always use an image that is not taking away from the purpose of the page. Nothing too busy or too loud.
  2. Your Logo. If you have a logo it is a great idea to use it right there!  You can alternative all use “Your Name Presents”.
  3. A rendering or video of your offering. If you are promoting an eBook, Checklist or other PDF download, I would suggest to add a visual representing the Freebie. If you are promoting a mini-course or a video series, then a video showing what your subscriber will get is appropriate. You can also use a video there to promote your Checklist or eBook.
  4. Pain Points. A good strategy is to open your header with your ideal client’s pain points. In this case, the Coach is calling upon people who are looking to get off the diet wagon.
  5. Pain point resolution. I love to add an emotional resolution to the ideal client’s pain point right there. In this case with have “achieving a Body that LOOKS and FEELS FABULOUS, no matter what age you are!”.
  6. What they are going to get. In the next sentence we have a question: where to send the Freebie using the title of the Freebie. So they know exactly what they are signing up for.
  7. Call-To-Action. Then of course, the most important part of the page is the CTA or Call-To-Action button.

All the 7 elements described above do need to be above the fold. Above the fold means in the area of the screen you can access without having to scroll down the page.

What They Get Section

Elements of this section:

  1. The Experience. Here is the section where you will describe the subscriber’s experience of the Freebie you are offering. In 3-4 bullet points, entice the viewer to become a subscriber.
  2. Call-To-Action. you can definitely add a second call-to-action button in this section.
  3. Additional Visual. You can add more visual representation of the Freebie. If you have not used an Introduction Video in the header, this would be the right section to do so.

Optional Section

Daring Design Co

Elements of this section:

This section is perfect if you need a little more space to describe your offering and further present the advantages of signing up.

  1. Testimonial. Great for creating breathing room and validation. Make sure you do have authorization to use the testimonial.
  2. What’s In The Freebie. Use this space to explain more in details what they are going to get by signing up for your freebie. Especially if your freebie is a bundle of different offerings.

Sign-up Box Section

Daring Design Co

Elements of this section:

We have 2 Sign-up Box Sections on this opt-in page. One can be just enough as well. Again as described in the header section, do not use a background image or color that will interfere with the focus of this section. Creating contrast is fine.

  1. Hook phrase. A great spot to add a hook phrase to entice your viewer to sign-up.
  2. What happens next. It’s a great idea to let your viewer know what happens when they click the button.
  3. Call-To-Action. That’s the most important element of the Sign-Up Box Section! Make is bold, visible and use a call-to-action phrase.

Bio + Testimonials Section

Elements of this section:

This section is a very important section. You will want to have at least your bio in this section even if you do not have any testimonials yet.

  1. Bio. Add your bio and headshot. This is usually the first time the viewer is introduces to you. This bio does not have to be long at all. Just enough to let your viewer know who you are and learn about your credentials or experience.
  2. Featured in. If you’ve been published or written for other blogs, this would be a great spot to show off.
  3. Testimonials. You’re giving an opportunity to let regular customers become brand advocates, which does more in terms of building trust, credibility, and emotion than you could ever do on your own.

Footer Section

Your footer section concludes your page. Keep it simple and effective. Copyright and perhaps links to your legal pages should be enough.

Don’t forget to have some ways for your viewers to share your page link.
